The vast majority of mechanical engineering companies are confident that they will return to the nominal sales level of 2019 in the medium term. This is the key message of the sixth VDMA flash survey on the corona pandemic, in which 658 member companies took part.
Following the cancellation of IFAT Munich, POWTECH followed and now SMM Hamburg has been postponed until the beginning of February 2021. Outside Germany, the oil & gas fairs Neftegaz Moscow and CIPPE Beijing were initially postponed and then finally cancelled. GASTECH is postponed by one year to September 2021. It is unclear whether ECWATECH in Moscow, the Iran Oil Show or IFAT India will actually be held in September or October: the organisers are keeping to the dates so far.
The VDMA International Trade Fair lists for process technology and water technology are is updated regularly. The latest versions can be downloaded below.
The rate of change in new orders in process engineering in April is below the figure for mechanical engineering as a whole. New orders are also down very sharply compared with the same month last year. Sales, on the other hand, were significantly higher in April than a year earlier.
According to a press release of the Russian accreditation authority Rosakkreditacia, in view of the current situation, COVID-19 is to enable the EAC certification of serial production temporarily by means of remote expert opinions.
The 5th VDMA Flash Survey shows that all mechanical engineering companies in the field of process engineering machinery and equipment are suffering from the economic consequences of the corona pandemic. Impairments are noticeable for 100% of the companies. Especially the order situation remains very tense. But there are also rays of hope: supply chains are stabilizing.
The Federation of German Industries (BDI), with the support of its members, has drawn up a document to provide compact, cross-sectoral support for restarting industrial production.
Corona pandemic hits the mechanical engineering industry across the board: Loss of orders and cancellations are becoming increasingly noticeable. Travel restrictions are also causing major problems for companies.
For most European companies in plant and apparatus engineering and process technology, the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU (PED) is the most important legal and technical basis for marketing their products in the European Union. However, despite the almost 20-year "tradition" of the PED, open questions regarding its scope or the interpretation of complex issues still arise. In addition, especially new employees in the companies are hardly familiar with the concept of the directive.
Due to the corona virus the CIPPE Beijing of March was first postponed (3. - 5.7.2020) and now completely cancelled.
After the Hanover Fair, IFAT Munich was also cancelled. Abroad, the oil & gas trade fairs Neftegaz Moscow and CIPPE Beijing were postponed until June / July and have now been finally cancelled. The water technology trade fair WATREX Cairo is currently postponed to October 2020.
The rate of change in new orders in process engineering is also below the value for the entire mechanical engineering sector in March. Order intake and sales were significantly lower than in the same month last year.
ECWATECH will take place from September 8 - 10, 2020 - the week in which IFAT Munich was scheduled. Registration is risk-free, as the BMWi will cover possible cancellation costs. So if quarantine and other corona regulations were relaxed until September, ECWATECH - already the most important water technology trade fair in Eastern Europe - would suddenly become the only and most important international water technology trade fair of 2020! 25 German companies have already registered.
At the beginning of April and in June, the BMWi / VDMA delegations and symposia on "Operation Excellence and Energy Efficiency in Chemical & Petrochemical Industry" should take place in the chemical clusters in Eastern Mexico and in the oil & gas region of Baku / Azerbaijan. Both are now being postponed.
VDMA & BMWi open doors for process technology to chemical & petrochemical clusters in Tampico / Altamira and Coatzacoalcos (Eastern Mexico). Talks at BASF Mexico, Braskem and others confirmed.
For the first time after a longer break there should be a federal participation in NEFTEGAZ in March 2020. The VDMA had also lobbied the BMWi for this. Due to the Corona Pandemic, the trade fair was initially postponed to 22 - 25.6.2020 - now the event has been cancelled this year.
You can register for the upcoming KHIMIA federal participation until 24.7.2020. Due to the current situation, the BMWi allows all participants to cancel at short notice and free of charge. This offers all interested parties a maximum of financial and planning security. VDMA and Messe Düsseldorf will be happy to advise you. Please contact us!
After the Hanover Fair, IFAT Munich has now also been cancelled. Abroad, the national participations at Neftegaz on 22 - 25.6.2020 (originally 13 - 16.4.2020) as well as CIPPE Beijing on 3 - 5.7.2020 and WATREX Cairo will now be filled to capacity on still unknown dates. Further events are affected.
IFAT 2020, which has already been postponed, will be cancelled and the next IFAT will be held in 2022.

Press releases

China largely responsible for growth
Europe as a stabilizer of the growth path
At the special show "Process Industry 4.0: The Age of Modular Production" ISPE, NAMUR, ProcessNet, VDMA and ZVEI show how the flexibility of plants in the process industry can be significantly increased through modularization.

EU-28 as stabiliser for the growth path
The German manufacturers of components and systems for water treatment, wastewater and sludge treatment were able to increase their exports to more than one billion euros for the first time in 2018. Compared to the previous year, exports increased significantly (plus 3.9 percent) to around 1,038 million euros (2018) compared to around 999 million euros (2017).
Export market China booming with 54 percent growth
German manufacturers of components and systems for water treatment, wastewater and sludge treatment were able to stabilise their exports at a high level in 2017. Compared to the previous year, exports rose slightly (plus 0.4 percent) to around 993 million euros (2017) compared to around 990 million euros (2016).
Making the world a good deal cleaner, conserving resources and maintaining good air and clear water - that requires state-of-the-art mechanical engineering. Around 3,300 exhibitors are demonstrating at IFAT in Munich that the technologies are ready to efficiently separate and recycle recyclable materials, clean water from plastic waste or purify polluted air. The machine manufacturers from Germany play a leading role here.
ACHEMA from 11th to 15th of June 2018 is the leading exhibition for the manufacturers of process plants and equipment. Richard Clemens, Managing Director of VDMA Process Plant and Equipment Association is pleased „that her in Frankfurt we will once again have an opportunity to see “live” and for ourselves what German engineers have to offer when it comes to process plant and equipment. For the manufacturers of process plants and equipment ACHEMA takes place in an economically positive surrounding.

We only need water for drinking, cooking and washing, right? Not even close! Water is in everything around us – from paper to clothes, computers and cars. Do you know how much water runs through your hands every day without you knowing it?
After 5 years of steady growth, the German production of process machinery and equipment dropped by 10 percent to 6.9 billion euros in 2015. Exports of process engineering machinery and equipment reached a volume of 5.5 billion euros. This is an increase of 1 percent compared to last year.
In 2015, the German manufacturers of components and systems for water treatment, wastewater and sludge treatment were able to increase their exports by nearly 3 percent.

The "VDMA Technology Guide Oil - Gas - Petrochemistry 2019/2020" has been published under the title Combining Fossil and Renewable Systems - Achieving Decarbonisation.
